McLaren Vale is a township in the wine region of McLaren Vale in South Australia. At the 2006 census, McLaren Vale had a population of 2,908.

The township was formed in 1923 from a merging of the two original villages of Gloucester and Bellevue, which were established in the 1840s by British pioneers.

The McLaren Vale wine region is well known for its dry red wines, especially those made from Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot are also grown. White wine varieties in the region include Chardonnay, Semillon, Sauvignon blanc and Riesling.

In recent years innovative wineries have begun using less common varieties such as Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Barbera, Cinsaut, Vermentino and Viognier.

Children's author Alexander S. Foxhall was born in McLaren Vale, as was former Newsboys frontman Peter Furler.

The Coast to Vines rail trail passes through Mclaren Vale. There was a station at Mclaren Vale on the former Marino-Willunga rail line that it follows.

d'Arenberg McLaren Vale: Make Your Own Wine more_vert
$90.00 AUD Book
close
One of the most significant wineries in McLaren Vale, d’Arenberg was established in 1912 when Joseph Osborn, a teetotaler and director of Thomas Hardy and Sons, sold his stable of prize winning horses to purchase the property that now houses the winery, cellar door and d’Arry’s Verandah Restaurant. Today, fourth generation family member Chester makes distinctive wines using traditional methods both in the vineyard and the winery. With over 60 wines and 25 different grape varieties, you’re sure to find something you’ll love.

d'Arenberg is the only winery in Australia to basket press both white wines as well as reds, making for a labor intensive process, but the quality of the results makes this worthwhile as the action is controlled and extremely gentle.

This hands on, interactive experience allows you an experience like no other, the chance to play winemaker. A palette of wine parcels, each with distinctive flavors and textures, are melded in search of balance, fullness and finesse.

The physical work has been done for you – the picking, crushing, fermenting, foot treading, basket pressing and barrel ageing, and you get to create a wine that is truly unique.

You then bottle a 750ml sample to take home and show off to your friends.

Wirra Wirra is an aboriginal name meaning "amongst the gumtrees". Cousins Greg and Roger Trott bought the land at Wirra Wirra in 1969 and over the years it has grown into one of South Australia’s most iconic and well known wineries. Greg did this all in his own inimitable style - always passionate, always iconoclastic, always fun and always unique. Trott lived by a simple philosophy; "Never give misery an even break, nor bad wine a second sip. You must be serious about quality, dedicated to your task in life, especially winemaking, but this should all be fun." Greg died in 2005, but his spirit and sense of purpose is alive and well at Wirra Wirra.
