Adelaide in 1839, looking south-east from North Terrace

Adelaide is the capital and most populous city of the Australian state of South Australia, and is the fifth-largest city in Australia. Adelaide has an estimated population of more than 1.28 million. The adjectival form "Adelaidean" is used in reference to the city and its residents.

Adelaide is a coastal city situated on the eastern shores of Gulf St Vincent, on the Adelaide Plains, north of the Fleurieu Peninsula, between Gulf St Vincent and the low-lying Mount Lofty Ranges. The suburbs reach roughly 20 km from the coast to the foothills but sprawl 100 km from Gawler at its northern extent to Sellicks Beach in the south.

Named in honour of Queen Adelaide, the German-born consort of King William IV, the city was founded in 1836 as the planned capital for a freely settled British province in Australia. Colonel William Light, one of Adelaide's founding fathers, designed the city and chose its location close to the River Torrens in the area originally inhabited by the Kaurna people. Light's design set out Adelaide in a grid layout, interspaced by wide boulevards and large public squares, and entirely surrounded by parkland. Early Adelaide was shaped by religious freedom and a commitment to political progressivism and civil liberties, which led to the moniker "City of Churches".

As South Australia's seat of government and commercial centre, Adelaide is the site of many governmental and financial institutions. Most of these are concentrated in the city centre along the cultural boulevard of North Terrace, King William Street and in various districts of the metropolitan area. Today, Adelaide is noted for its many festivals and sporting events, its food, wine and culture, its long beachfronts, and its large defence and manufacturing sectors. It ranks highly in terms of liveability, being listed in the Top 10 of The Economist's World's Most Liveable Cities index in 2010 and being ranked the most liveable city in Australia by the Property Council of Australia in 2011.

See a different side of this city with a 1.5 - 2 hour walking tour of Adelaide's street art. You'll be surprised just how much street art there is here!

During the street art walking tour of Adelaide, we will uncover some of the street art gems that Adelaide has to offer. About two years ago, there was no street art in Adelaide. There has recently been a shift in council attitudes towards street art in Adelaide which has opened the doors to many local and international street artists to leave their mark on the city. Much of the street art in Adelaide is hidden, down little side alleys, basically places that you wouldn't normally go. We will show you these places as well as talking about the artists who have done the street art and different meanings behind the pieces of art.

McLaren Vale Wine Tour by Bike more_vert
    $159.00 AUD Book
    close
Experience the beauty of South Australia’s wine country on a leisurely bicycle tour of the McLaren Vale region. Pedal through Kuitpo Forest and stunning vineyards, stopping to sample wines from two or more local wineries. With transportation to and from Adelaide, experienced guides, lunch, and all equipment provided, discovering the highlights of Australia’s southern wine region couldn’t be simpler. Numbers are limited to nine people on this tour, ensuring you'll spend an intimate day with a small group of like-minded wine lovers.

Your day of cycling begins with transportation in a luxury vehicle from your Adelaide hotel to the renowned wine region of McLaren Vale, roughly 30 minutes south of the city. Known around the world for its complex Shiraz, McLaren Vale has 7,952 acres (3,218 hectares) of the grape under vine, which accounts for roughly half of the region's crush each year.
Once you're outfitted with a high-quality mountain bike and helmet, and given an introductory skills rundown, experienced guides lead you through Kuitpo Forest, where an abundance of radiata pine trees shade the path. After you emerge from the sun-dappled forest, continue your ride along sections of the Kidman Trail. Since the tour begins from the highest point in the area, you can take in breathtaking views of the vineyards while coasting down Willunga Hill.
Continue your leisurely ride through the wineries, where rows of vines blanket the landscape. Sample wines made from these vines with two complimentary tastings at local vineyards. Depending on your group's interests, additional stops can be made. If your tastes lean more toward hops, you can opt for a stop at a local microbrewery, and purchase a beer tasting instead. Find a new favorite varietal or vineyard? Pick up as many bottles as you would like (own expense), and a vehicle will transport them back to the hotel for you.
To sample more of the region’s offerings, enjoy a provided lunch that features a mix of produce from local farms. Continue the relaxed ride to your final location, which is selected by the group. Bike down country roads, or catch a ride in the accompanying vehicle if you’ve had your fill of cycling for the day. Your luxury 4WD will transport you and your purchases back to Adelaide, where you can crack open one of your new bottles and reminisce about the day you spent bicycling amidst the vines.

Immerse yourself in the magnificent animal kingdom found at Australia’s second oldest zoo. The Adelaide Zoo features a variety of native and exotic wildlife, in addition to botanic gardens and historic architectural features. Say hi to giant pandas, Sumatran tigers, sun bears, gibbons and kangaroos, among other resident animals. Walk through an aviary brimming with bird life and a simulated jungle where it feels like orangutans are within reach! Located just a short hop from the city center, Adelaide Zoo provides great fun for the whole family.

Visit: Adelaide Zoo, Frome Rd, Adelaide, South Australia 5000 Australia

Head to the Adelaide Zoo, a pleasant 15-minute stroll from downtown Adelaide. The zoo features roomy and well-kept roaming areas for its 1,800 endangered and rare critters from India, Africa, South America, Southeast Asia and Australia. As you enter, note one of the zoo's important architectural features: the cast-iron entry gates that date to the 1883 opening. The spacious grounds are also a botanic garden blooming with native and exotic flora.
You might start with a visit to see the stars of the zoo: Wang Wang and Funi, the only giant pandas living in the southern hemisphere. The adorable black-and-white heavyweights came to Australia after an earthquake in the Sichuan province of China destroyed their home at the Wolong Giant Panda Research Centre.
Next walk through the impressive South East Asia wing to see the siamang (a gibbon), sun bear, Sumatran orangutan, and Sumatran tiger exhibits. Check out Australian natives including several species of kangaroo, wallaby and wombat. Then marvel at the lions, cheetahs, baboons, and meerkats, among other beauties in the African region.
Ask at the entrance about the day’s schedule times for animal feedings and zookeeper talks. During the keeper talks, the audience can ask questions and hear fascinating facts about the animals they care for such as tigers, orangutans, pelicans, penguins, hippos and macaws.
Feel the soft fur of a kangaroo or feed a deer at the Children’s Zoo, where kids can interact with more than 120 animals. To learn more about environmental conservation, head under the green roof of the Envirodome for displays on innovative ideas. The building features hay-bale walls, water-conserving toilets, and solar panels.
When you want to rest and have a bite to eat, head to one of the cafes, food stalls or picnic areas located throughout the zoo.

Three Barossa Valley locals bought the neglected winery in 1996 and have since fully restored it. The staff welcome you in for a relaxed wine tasting in their rustic tasting room.
As you make your way to your next destination, pause at Mengler's Hill Lookout for panoramic views over the Barossa Valley. The fourth and final winery will be something special. Your guide will pick something to suit the group size and time of year.
Throughout your tour, your friendly guide and winery hosts share their insider knowledge and personal touch, creating a truly memorable Barossa Valley wine tasting experience.
